Fix Chrome Instant Search

Today my Instant Search feature in Google Chrome stopped working, I’d enter a search term in the address bar (omnibar), press enter and nothing… no action whatsoever.

It turns out I had two Google search engines installed in the browser, and the one that was selected as default was the incorrect one. This wasn’t immediately obvious as only one Google search engine was showing in the drop down list in the settings.

To fix this, navigate to the ‘Manage Search Engines’ setting like so:

  1. Click the Chrome menu  Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In the “Search” section, click the ‘Manage Search Engines’ button.

In here, the second ‘Google’ search had been added and made default. The correct one can be identified by the blue Google logo. I removed the incorrect entry and made the primary ‘Google’ search engine the default and voila, instant search restored!

The correct Google search looks like this:

Correct Google Instant Search Setting

If it is missing you can add it back in using this code:

{google:baseURL}search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:instantExtendedEnabledParameter}ie={inputEncoding}

Cause?

I use Linux as my daily driver but jumped on Chrome a newly built Windows 7 box earlier in the day. I suspect this added the additional, unwanted search engine as the instant search stopped working immediately after.
